Chapter 23

"I'm always happy to hit the enemy, but have you thought this through?"

Sam was glad Anna was up for the rescue, but she understood her concerns. They were following the armed troops and their captives, hanging back enough to avoid attention, but still remaining close enough to see where the larger group went. Now and then they passed people coming the other way, and each time Sam would busy herself with the thinscreen, pretending to examine some riveting piece of information. It worked, because nobody spared them a second glance.

She knew it couldn't last though. Someone in the hangar would raise the alarm, and then everyone on board the huge ship would be looking for them. The only solution was to overcome a dozen heavily-armed troops and share the weapons out amongst their Henerian prisoners. Unfortunately, the first part of that solution was going to be damn near impossible. They'd need flash grenades, or maybe a dozen armed troops of their own.

"Maybe we can get them all into an airlock, then space them," muttered Anna.

"Yes, and maybe we can convince them the war is a waste of time, and get them to surrender," snapped Sam. "We need a workable plan, not a party trick."

Anna was unfazed by Sam's outburst. "The airlock idea is a good one. Once inside, they couldn't shoot their way out."

"What about their weapons? Those would vanish right along with them."

They walked on in silence, and Sam realised they were approaching the crew quarters. There was a sentry further along the corridor, leaning against the wall with a blast rifle cradled against his chest. He saluted the newcomers, then glanced towards Sam and Anna.

They'd just passed an elevator, and there was nowhere else to go but straight ahead, past the sentry. Sam knew they were trapped, so she did the only thing possible. She stopped, showed the thinscreen to Anna, then gestured at the lift.

"Idiot," said Anna, playing along. "I told you deck three."

They beat a retreat, then waited for the lift to arrive. Sam felt a prickling between her shoulder blades, and she knew the sentry was watching them. Would he come over? Challenge them? Very slowly, she began to clench and unclench her fists, mentally preparing herself for a swift physical response.

Then the lift pinged, and she and Anna hurried inside while the doors were still opening. They exited on the deck above, and then Sam led the way down the corridor to a nearby stairwell. She pulled the door open and they slipped through, taking the stairs two at a time. At the bottom she eased the door open a fraction and looked out, and when she saw an empty corridor in both directions she motioned Anna out ahead of her. They were back in the original corridor, having bypassed the sentry, but Sam knew there would be another if the Mayestrans were keeping their captives in this section of the crew quarters. They were passing doors now, leading to individual sleeping quarters, and she noticed some had red indicators on their control panels.
